Marriott Announces Starwood Guest Reservation Database Security Incident

We are sharing the following press release from Marriott | 11.30.18 |

Marriott has taken measures to investigate and address a data security incident involving the Starwood guest reservation database. On November 19, 2018, the investigation determined that there was unauthorized access to the database, which contained guest information relating to reservations at Starwood properties* on or before September 10, 2018.

On September 8, 2018, Marriott received an alert from an internal security tool regarding an attempt to access the Starwood guest reservation database in the United States. Marriott quickly engaged leading security experts to help determine what occurred. Marriott learned during the investigation that there had been unauthorized access to the Starwood network since 2014. The company recently discovered that an unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information, and took steps towards removing it. On November 19, 2018, Marriott was able to decrypt the information and determined that the contents were from the Starwood guest reservation database.

The company has not finished identifying duplicate information in the database, but believes it contains information on up to approximately 500 million guests who made a reservation at a Starwood property. For approximately 327 million of these guests, the information includes some combination of name, mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, Starwood Preferred Guest (“SPG”) account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date, and communication preferences. For some, the information also includes payment card numbers and payment card expiration dates, but the payment card numbers were encrypted using Advanced Encryption Standard encryption (AES-128). There are two components needed to decrypt the payment card numbers, and at this point, Marriott has not been able to rule out the possibility that both were taken. For the remaining guests, the information was limited to name and sometimes other data such as mailing address, email address, or other information.

Marriott reported this incident to law enforcement and continues to support their investigation. The company has already begun notifying regulatory authorities.

“We deeply regret this incident happened,” said Arne Sorenson, Marriott’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We fell short of what our guests deserve and what we expect of ourselves. We are doing everything we can to support our guests, and using lessons learned to be better moving forward.”

“Today, Marriott is reaffirming our commitment to our guests around the world. We are working hard to ensure our guests have answers to questions about their personal information, with a dedicated website and call center. We will also continue to support the efforts of law enforcement and to work with leading security experts to improve. Finally, we are devoting the resources necessary to phase out Starwood systems and accelerate the ongoing security enhancements to our network,” Mr. Sorenson continued.

Guest Support
Marriott has taken the following steps to help guests monitor and protect their information:

Dedicated Website and Call Center
We have established a dedicated website (info.starwoodhotels.com) and call center to answer questions you may have about this incident. The frequently-asked questions on info.starwoodhotels.com may be supplemented from time to time. The call center is open seven days a week and is available in multiple languages. Call volume may be high, and we appreciate your patience.

Email Notification
Marriott will begin sending emails on a rolling basis starting today, November 30, 2018, to affected guests whose email addresses are in the Starwood guest reservation database.

Free WebWatcher Enrollment
Marriott is providing guests the opportunity to enroll in WebWatcher free of charge for one year. WebWatcher monitors internet sites where personal information is shared and generates an alert to the consumer if evidence of the consumer’s personal information is found. Due to regulatory and other reasons, WebWatcher or similar products are not available in all countries. Guests from the United States who activate WebWatcher will also be provided fraud consultation services and reimbursement coverage for free. To activate WebWatcher, go to info.starwoodhotels.com and click on your country, if listed, for enrollment.

Marriott is furnishing a Form 8-K with the SEC attaching a copy of this press release and presenting certain other information with respect to the incident.

ACBSP Board Chair Alejandro Cheyne Installed as the 120th Rector of Universidad del Rosario

José Alejandro Cheyne García, Ph.D., 2018-19 Chair of the ACBSP Board of Directors, was recently installed as the 120th Rector of Universidad del Rosario. Founded in 1653, Rosario is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Colombia. Dr. Cheyne replaces Dr. José Manuel Restrepo Abondano, who resigned when he was appointed Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Colombian Government.

Dr. Cheyne was elected on October 1, through a public vote in which Number Colleges (15 active undergraduate students) and Consiliates (the Board of Directors of the institution, made up of five members) participated. According to Universidad del Rosario, this election system, which has had few variations since the 17th century, was imposed by the founder Fray Cristóbal de Torres, Archbishop of Santafé in the New Kingdom of Granada, to respond to the pretension of the Dominican religious to convert the Cloister into a seminary for the novices of the Order of Preachers. The term of Rector is four years, with possible reelection for two more periods, or a maximum of 12 years.

ACBSP President/CEO Jeffrey Alderman and Dr. Kim Wong, Chair-elect of the ACBSP Board of Directors attended the October 24 Solemn Ceremony of Possession of the Elected Rector in Bogotá, presided over by Iván Duque Márquez, President of the Republic of Colombia, in his capacity as Patron of the University.

President Duque highlighted the trajectory of the Universidad del Rosario as a teacher of great academics, scientists and personalities that have transformed the history of the country. President Duque said of Dr. Cheyne: “Today a recognition is given to a pedagogue, who has had the greatest exaltation: from a schoolboy [to rector].”

"I feel a deep and genuine emotion today when taking over the rectory of our Colegio Mayor,” said Dr. Cheyne. “I feel like a son, proud to be a man who emerged from the heart of the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario."

Dr. Cheyne celebrates 30 years as a Rosarista with Universidad del Rosario in 2018, which highlights the role that the university has had in his life as in his career. "I have tremendous gratitude, because I understood my vocation to teaching and started a career between teaching, research, extension and management,” Dr. Cheyne said. “I believe great reflection is a delivery without limit and a work without rest. We will work hard with the only and real protagonists, our students, to deliver what they demand—a pedagogy where learning is privileged over teaching. This, accompanied by the use and appropriation of technology at the service of education, must be our future."

A History of Service

Dr. Cheyne is considered one of the most important professors in higher education programs in Colombia. His firm desire to share his experiences of theoretical - practical learning from a very young age has earned him several recognitions such as the Military Medal of Distinguished Services of the FF.MM, Executive of the Year of the International Junior Chamber Colombia, Number Collegiate of the University of Rosario and best professor in different universities. Dr. Cheyne was elected Chair of the ACBSP Board of Directors in June 2018, making him the first from Latin America to hold this position.

He previously served as Dean of the School of Management at Universidad del Rosario. Before joining Universidad del Rosario, Dr. Cheyne served as Rector of the Business University Foundation of the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá (Uniempresarial) for ten years. He was Vice-dean of the School of Economics of the Sergio Arboleda University, Director of the Business Advisory Unit of the Universidad del Rosario and Coordinator of specialization at the Universidad de la Sabana.

Commission Voting on Certificate Accreditation Standards

Last year, in 2017, we talked to our members at most regional meetings about a plan to begin accrediting certificates. The response was highly favorable. The Accreditation Governance Board (AGB) and the two Boards of Commissioners have now developed seven standards to accredit certificates.

These seven standards will be presented for approval at the two commission meetings in June. We are providing the seven standards for your review prior to the meeting.

ACBSP Standards for Demonstrating Excellence in Certificate Accreditation

STANDARD 1 - LEADERSHIP:

A systematic leadership process must exist that promotes performance excellence and continuous improvement.

STANDARD 2 - STRATEGIC PLANNING:

Strategic plans must include measurable goals.

STANDARD 3 - STUDENT AND STAKEHOLDER FOCUS:

A systematic process must be used to determine expectations of students and other key stakeholders.

STANDARD 4 - STUDENT LEARNING ASSESSMENT:

A systematic student learning assessment process must measure students’ knowledge and skills compared to expected outcomes.

STANDARD 5 - FACULTY FOCUS:

A systematic process must ensure instructors are appropriately qualified and that their credentials and skill sets align with learning outcomes.

STANDARD 6 - CURRICULUM:

A systematic process must ensure continuous improvement of the curriculum. The curriculum must be comprised of appropriate subject matter outcomes to prepare students for success.

STANDARD 7 - CERTIFICATE KEY PERFORMANCE RESULTS:

A systematic process must identify and track key performance measures for continuous improvement. Demonstrate that adequate resources and services exist.

Certificate Accreditation Eligibility

The certificate must be eligible for higher education credit. In addition, the other membership requirements already in the bylaws will be required for accreditation of certificates.

A Certificate – An award for an academic certificate that requires completion of 12 credits in a year or less for a full-time student course load and may take longer for part time students. Some programs provide specialized training for people who already have diplomas or degrees. Others are for those who want to quickly complete a program that leads to a specific job.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate - An award that requires completion of an organized program of study requiring 12 credit hours beyond the bachelor's. Designed for those with a bachelor's degree who do not meet the academic requirements of a master's degree.

Post-Master's Certificate - An award that requires completion of an organized program of study of 12 credit hours beyond the master's degree but does not meet the requirements of academic degrees at the doctorate level.

All-Members Meetings

Champions and Co-Champions from our member schools will vote on the adoption of the certificate accreditation standards at both All-Member Meetings to be held at ACBSP Conference 2018. The time, dates, and location are as follow.

Applications to full-time, two-year MBA programs in the U.S. have been down since 2014, and this past fall, 64 percent of programs reported declines, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council’s “Application Trends Survey Report 2017.”

To counter that, many business schools are adding multiple MBA programs covering specialized areas to expand their applicant pool.

The trend has been prevalent in the last three to four years, with schools adding specializations and concentrations “to meet the needs of the community, the students and society,” says Steve Parscale, chief accreditation officer for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Unemployment is at record lows, which traditionally means a drop-off in MBA interest, Parscale adds. Specialized offerings are helping to mitigate that enrollment challenge.

Fulfilling the need for a more customized education

Specialized MBAs allow students to have a more “contextual learning experience,” says Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean of the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

Its MBA for Educators and its Business of Medicine Physician MBA bring in professionals who don’t have a business background, but who aspire to administration positions in their fields. “These programs have opened up more avenues for us,” says Kesner. “This is a way of addressing what had been a relatively flat MBA market.”

Similarly, Clarion University of Pennsylvania in recent years has launched specialized MBA programs in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and in Healthcare, among others.

“These decisions were based on consultation with the board of advisors coupled with student and workforce demand,” says Phil Frese, dean of the College of Business Administration and Information Sciences.

Others adding MBA programs for those outside of traditional business fields include NYU Stern, which has two new one-year programs: a Tech MBA and a Fashion & Luxury MBA.

Helping local business find qualified employees

Market research convinced Sellinger School of Business administrators at Loyola University Maryland to add MBA specializations in Data Analytics and in Investments and Applied Portfolio Management, says Susan Hasler, assistant dean for business programs.

“In speaking to alumni in Baltimore, we found employers want people who can analyze, and that data is something we need to be offering,” Hasler says. “We were already offering the courses, but now we’re marketing it as a full program.”

The Investments and Applied Portfolio Management MBA also gets more granular than a regular finance track would. “In recent years, we’ve had a growth in the number of students coming from investment firms who really wanted to learn a specific skill set for this industry,” says Hasler.

Both programs include experiential learning that allows students to consult for local businesses. The investment students even manage part of Loyola’s endowment fund, which saw a 20 percent return last year. “These offerings make us more competitive,” says Hasler.

Add more specializations?

After launching its MBA concentrations, Clarion experienced a 7 percent growth in enrollment from fall 2015 to fall 2016. The incoming class for fall 2017 was up 8 percent from the year before, says Frese. “Nearly 10 percent of our new students are choosing concentration options as part of their MBA experience.”

Loyola is exploring other specializations. “It’s a trend that’s going to continue,” Hasler says. “Students want to customize their program and dive in deeper to an area they are interested in.”

Parscale advises schools to take a quality-over-quantity approach. “Don’t change things to be competitive unless it’s part of your mission,” he says. “Once you get out of your specialty strength area, it’s like you’re adding water to your program and thinning it out—you don’t want to reduce the quality of the education.”

The Accreditation Governance Board (AGB) is leading an effort with several teams from the Associated Degree Board of Commissioners and the Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners to improve the language in the Standards for accreditation. The Standards are not being changed. The wording is being improved, clarified, and redundancy removed. Standard 6 was split into two Standards, 6 and 7. Nothing new was added. The Standard was split to clarify and simplify the language. The AGB, Associate and Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Boards of Commissioners have all worked hard to get the Standards to you for a vote at each commission's -- Associate Degree and Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree -- respective meetings on Sunday, June 25.

Timeline:

Vote on splitting standard 6 into two standards, 6 and 7, June 2017, Annual Conference, Anaheim, CA

Criteria improved 2018

Full implementation 2021.

This is the improved wording for standard 6 and standard 7:

Standard 6 – Curriculum:

Standard 7 - Business Unit Performance:
