Maastricht School of Management's commitment to a green future spans its academic offering

In 2006, the United Nations Global Compact—the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative—presented at the UN Global Forum on the topic of Business as an Agent of World Benefit.

The UN body proposed a global engagement platform for academic institutions driving towards sustainable development, and the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) were born. To date, there are over 650 signatories to the PRME worldwide, all forging ahead for ethical development.

One of these signatories is Maastricht School of Management (MSM), whose commitment to a green future spans its academic offering, faculty research, and extra-curricular activities. In the same year as the UN Global Forum, MSM opened a sustainable development center, and it was only a few years later, in 2010, that the school made corporate social responsibility (CSR) a core part of the MBA curriculum.

This kind of school-wide attention to the issue of socially responsible business makes a huge impact in creating sustainably-minded MBAs. For Dr. Jakomijn van Wijk, Associate Professor in Sustainable Business, it’s all about a holistic approach to business education.

“[It’s about] including sustainability in the courses. For example, when you take a finance course, you could also learn about impact investing; and when you study operations management, you could learn about the green supply chain,” she explains.

This is one of the most forward-thinking aspects of the MBA program at MSM for Jakomijn, as she suspects that, in future, all courses will have to have one eye on sustainability. It will no longer be an option for MBAs to prioritize profit over everything else; profit will be inextricably linked with social responsibility.

“That’s what’s relevant in the MBA courses [now]—not just acknowledging that sustainability is the issue, but how you organize your business around it,” Jakomijn says. “How do you strategize for sustainability, how do you collaborate with suppliers, government, civil society and even your competitors on the issue and how do you embed it in your daily operations?”

Another aspect of designing a sustainably-minded MBA curriculum is making sure that it accounts for the way that sustainable development works across cultures. According to Dr. Diederik de Boer, Director International Projects and Consultancies and Assistant Professor Sustainable Business Development at MSM, sustainable business can vary market to market in a way that is useful for MBAs to be aware of.

“If you’re working for the African market for example, it’s much more development-oriented,” he explains. “Whereas, here in Europe, it’s much more environmental and social-consciousness-oriented—what we are doing with our waste, a circular economy, those are the things which are more important [here].”

The faculty at MSM are aware that international priorities within sustainability can vary widely in a way that impacts businesses, and this seeps into their teaching. One course MSM offers its MBA students is a specialization summer school in International Business and Sustainable Development, which takes place over two weeks each July.

Bruna Moura Bruno was a student on this specialization in 2018, having worked for several years in organic produce in Brazil before starting on the MBA at Maastricht School of Management.

Having run her own fruit and vegetable business exporting produce to the Netherlands from Brazil, when Bruna saw that there would be international companies giving talks as part of the specialization course, she was intrigued.

“We had company visits, we had guest lecturers coming to debate and present their initiatives—I thought that was a great opportunity to see in practice how these debates are being dealt with by companies,” Bruna explains.

This merging of corporate with ecological thinking is key to the future of business—and business education—as it is seen at MSM. For Bruna, it’s shown her that financial success and social responsibility don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

“I think it is possible to have both mindsets,” she says. “It’s possible to be profitable, to have a company, to have management skills, but in a more sustainable way and being more socially and environmentally responsible.”

Diederik agrees. “[It is important to] look at the sustainability options and strategy from an international perspective,” he says. “Looking beyond the common markets and knowing what issues are at stake, both in emerging and developed economies, and how to bridge these markets in a more sustainable way.

“At Maastricht School of Management, we have the [ability] to make use of our international networks to do more research, and I think that makes us unique in the business community.”

The business programs offered through Maastricht School of Management have been accredited by ACBSP since 2000.

The new tenant in Gilbert’s University Building is busy working to attract potential students while hustling to prepare for its October opening.

The Gilbert campus will be the third Arizona location and 42nd nationwide for Park University, which is based in the Kansas City suburb of Parkville, Missouri. The other two Arizona locations are at Luke and Davis-Monthan Air Force bases. Park has a strong, historic relationship with the military.

Classes are scheduled to begin Oct. 15, which aligns with the university’s Fall II semester. Offerings will be for evening students this academic year.

Course options will include undergraduate classes in liberal arts, business and criminal justice, and graduate classes in public administration, education technology and business. Several concentrations in each area will be offered.

Park University will have a more conventional calendar with traditional and nontraditional students in the 2019-20 academic year, according to Executive Director Jeff Ehrlich.

More students expected

Enrollment sits at 12 students with more in the process of enrollment. Ehrlich said the college set a goal of about 50 students when classes start and expects to gain more students in the future. He told Community Impact Newspaper Aug. 30 that the school is on track for meeting the initial 50-student goal.

Athletics should help growth too as the Park Buccaneers will compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The NAIA is a governing body similar to the National Collegiate Athletic Association but generally for smaller schools.

University President Greg Gunderson sent Jeff Ehrlich and his wife, Donna, the campus’ academic director, who are both experienced with Park University operations, to open the Gilbert center.

Gaining accreditations

Jeff Ehrlich said Park University has received accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, an independent corporation founded in 1895 as one of six regional accreditors in the U.S. The commission accredits degree-granting secondary institutions, such as Park University in the North Central Region, which includes Arizona.

The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, which focuses on recognizing teacher excellence in business, determining student outcomes and a continuous improvement model, accredits the school’s business program.

Under the continuous improvement model universities like Park are committed to ensuring their business programs will give students the skills employers desire, Jeff Ehrlich said.

In the community

The college has established ties to local high schools and will take Advanced Placement and some high school class credits. They have also sought agreements with the Maricopa County Community College District to take those schools’ hours in transfer, which would go toward building a flexible education model at a “reasonable price point,” Jeff Ehrlich said.

Hiring is taking place for faculty and staff as well as for coaches since Athletic Director Steve Wilson came on board from the main campus.

University Building

Park University occupies the first floor of the University Building, which accounts for about 11,000 square feet in the 89,000-square-foot building. It does have a right of refusal on other tenants as space becomes available, which gives the school room for expected future growth.

Park will pay the town nearly $800,000 in rent for three years in the building, originally occupied by St. Xavier University of Chicago for less than a year in 2015-16.

Jeff Ehrlich said he does not worry that low enrollment will cancel any classes. He said a “Pirate Patch” program—an homage to the campus’ mascot, the Pirates—allows students to come together on campus and remotely attend a lecture from a professor at home or one of the other satellite campuses. Students from several campuses can be in the same class that way.

“Gilbert did a fabulous job,” Jeff Ehrlich said. “This is the most technologically sound building—one of the best educational facilities I have ever seen.”

ESCANABA — Students in Lake Superior State University’s Lukenda School of Business have again performed exceptionally well on the Major Field Test (MFT) in Business, administered by Educational Testing Service.

The Lukenda School of Business uses the MFT to assess the student learning outcomes of its bachelor degree programs each year. The test measures knowledge in the areas of accounting, economics, management, quantitative business analysis, finance, marketing, legal and social environment, information systems and international issues. The scores of graduating seniors who took the MFT during the 2017/2018 academic year were compared with those of thousands of business students from 400 institutions.

Escanaba/Iron Mountain Regional Center student Bailey Dalgord of Escanaba (majoring in accounting) scored in the top 10 percent of all participating students in the United States. Chelsea Auge of Gladstone (majoring in business administration-management) scored in the top 20 percent of students.

Associate Dean of WNMU’s School of Business Dr. Miguel Vicéns accepts a certificate of Full Reaffirmation of Accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs at the accrediting body’s conference earlier this month.

The Western New Mexico University School of Business has recently been granted Full Reaffirmation of Accreditation under the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). This is the third reaffirmation of the WNMU School of Business, and the accreditation runs for ten years.

Associate Dean of the School of Business, Dr. Miguel Vicéns, attended the 30th Annual ACBSP conference to accept a certificate of WNMU’s accreditation and continue learning with School of Business faculty from all across the nation.

“I am extremely happy to have achieved full reaffirmation of our accreditation. The ACBSP assures the quality of our degrees, as well as the international recognition of quality in our programs. As part of this reaffirmation, the School of Business has established a five-year strategic plan, a marketing plan, and an assessment plan to ensure continuity of quality programs,” Dr. Vicéns said.

The ACBSP Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners examined the business programs at Western New Mexico University this spring, taking into account many factors, including program learning outcomes, stakeholder satisfaction, leadership and faculty qualifications.

Therefore, the ACBSP accreditation certifies that the teaching and learning processes within the undergraduate and graduate business programs offered through the WNMU School of Business meet the rigorous educational standards established by ACBSP, which accredits business programs at nearly 1,200 campuses in 60 countries.

The WNMU business programs were first accredited by ACBSP in 1997, and the university is required to go through the reaffirmation process every 10 years to maintain accreditation.

“Western New Mexico University has shown a commitment to teaching excellence and to the process of quality improvement by participating in the accreditation process,” said ACBSP Chief Accreditation Officer Dr. Steve Parscale, who presented the Certificate of Reaffirmation of Accreditation at ACBSP Conference 2018 in Kansas City, Mo. “This reaffirmation of accreditation is evidence that WNMU is committed to maintaining the highest quality business education for their students for the next 10 years, just as they have done since 1997.”

The WNMU School of Business received support from the local community, university administration, WNMU students and other stakeholders. “Many people participated of the accreditation process, and for that, I thank them. We couldn’t have achieved this milestone without continuous support throughout the assessment process,” Dr. Vicéns said. “We are committed to the continuous improvement of our academic offerings and to providing experiential learning opportunities to all interested stakeholders.”

UTICA – Utica College has been awarded an accreditation of its business programs, and it’s a certification that the college has been working on for the last three years.

Utica College officials say this certifies that the teaching and learning processes at UC meet the education standards of the Accreditation Council, which reviews the quality and integrity, leadership and faculty credentials of business degree programs, among other items.

“We know that business is changing today, really rapidly. If it's not our relationship with our global trade partners it's the impact of technology,” said Candace Grant, associate dean of business programs at Utica College. “We need to be up-to-date, we need to have the processes in place to ensure that we are being contemporary and what we deliver. For students, it's that they know that we are always focused on what's happening in the marketplace and bringing the education up-to-date."

The accreditation applies to both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

A new agreement aims to make it easier and less expensive for Delgado Community College business graduates to transfer directly to a university and earn a bachelor’s degree.

Delgado has signed a transfer partnership with Southern New Hampshire University, a private institution with more than 200 certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs.

The partnership allows Delgado graduates with an associate degree in business administration to transfer into an online bachelor’s degree program in business administration at SNHU. They will receive a reduced tuition rate at the university, a news release said.

Delgado employees and their immediate family members will be offered a 10 percent reduced tuition rate at SNHU.

Southern New Hampshire University achieved ACBSP accreditation of their business programs in 1994. The business programs at Delgado Community College have been accredited by ACBSP since 1995.

Dutch business school shifts its focus to push tech innovation on a global scale

MSM is pushing tech-focused electives and masters courses to drive global innovation

Maastricht School of Management (MSM) in the Netherlands is a business school on the rise.

In the most recent CEO Magazine global MBA rankings, published in March, the Executive MBA program at MSM climbed to 15th place from 20th, and its MBA program was recently ranked in the top tier of MBAs globally by the same magazine.

This steady climb to the forefront of business education in Europe is driven by a shift in MSM’s focus that has taken place over the last five years. Though originally known for their work linking Europe with emerging and developing countries, MSM has recently expanded its repertoire with the goal of driving global innovation, and the change is being felt throughout their roster of programs.

MSM has partnered with RWTH Aachen University in the creation of five brand new master’s degrees in management and engineering, covering trending Industry 4.0 topics like computer-aided manufacturing and production systems engineering, representing a timely response to the interest in tech-focused course options among business students.

But self-reinvention, for Maastricht School of Management, doesn’t just mean introducing new courses—it also means updating longer-standing ones.

Since embarking on its new vision, MSM has changed the curricula of many of its existing degrees to align with its innovative mindset. The school now offers a sports-focused MBA as well as an Executive MBA in healthcare management.

The latter program was launched in Nanjing, China, in 2015 and aims to familiarize students with the med-tech of the future as well as more traditional concepts like cost management and patient-centered care.

MSM hasn’t totally abandoned its roots. In fact, technological innovation is at the heart of the school’s continued commitment to strengthening Europe’s connections to developing countries.

According to MSM dean, Professor Wim Naudé, the “transfer of technology and the adoption and adaptation of technology by entrepreneurs in developing and emerging economies are vital for meeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.”

Hence, the school is developing an agri-business management MBA in Ethiopia, promoting agricultural technology in Kenya and Indonesia, and is exploring how to promote knowledge of 3D-printing in Africa.

With a focus on global connectivity and societal impact, MSM launched the Corvers Chair in Innovation Procurement in 2016.

Based on the recognition that public procurement can play an important role in stimulating private sector innovation, the Corvers Chair is an initiative to assist the EU and its member states in their strategic use of public procurement to create innovations that the market is failing to generate on its own. The Chair is held by Professor Nicola Dimitri, who is also attached to Siena University and the University of Cambridge. The initiative has already done important work for major Dutch-based clients, with Professor Dimitri feeding the new knowledge gained by the initiative back into the MSM ecosystem through a series of lectures.

As Professor Naudé puts it, “MSM has demonstrated a commitment to innovation of all kinds—we practice what we preach.”

Both MBA applicants and business education bodies have started to take note: the school was highly commended by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) in its annual Innovation Award—its second nomination in five years, possibly a unique achievement among business schools.

To crown it all, in 2017, the Maastricht School of Management MBA cohort in Maastricht was amongst the largest it’s ever been.

The business programs offered at Maastricht School of Management have been accredited by ACBSP since 2000.

Largest donation in university history follows 2017 gift, and previous record mark, of $15M

Lipscomb University President Randy Lowry has announced the largest donation in institution history, a $23 million gift that will partially fund construction of a new business school building.

The donors have asked to remain anonymous, according to a release.

Lowry, who announced the news Tuesday night during the university’s Imagine 2018 The Power of Telling Nashville’s Story featuring veteran journalist and author Tom Brokaw, said the donation represents the lead monetary contribution in the effort to create a new space for the Lipscomb University College of Business. The school, which has long operated from the Swang Business Center in the heart of the campus, is celebrating 100 years of operations this academic year.

The gift will be used to partially fund design (by Nashville-based Tuck-Hinton Architects) and construction of both the future building (pictured) and a parking structure, while assisting students, professors and programs, as well as global learning facilities in Florence, Italy.

Lipscomb has not yet announced a future use of the Swang Business Center once the planned facility opens. Nor has it announced a price tag for future project or when groundbreaking might take place.

The future building will be located within a pocket of the northern segment of the Lipscomb campus framed by Belmont Boulevard on the west, Grandview Drive on the north and Rosemont Avenue on the east.

“This is a significant moment in the history of Lipscomb University,” Lowry said in the release. “We are grateful to the donors for their commitment to this institution. This gift is an investment in our College of Business as a way to continue to elevate the image of the school as a leader in business education in Nashville and in the nation.”

The Lipscomb University College of Business has more than 600 undergraduate and graduate students, 16 undergraduate programs and four graduate programs. It touted a 95 percent overall job placement rate for 2016 and thousands of alumni.

In 2016, the college was named the top undergraduate business program in Tennessee and the No. 2 part-time M.B.A. degree program in Tennessee by Bloomberg Business Week, as well as the No. 1 and No. 2 Christian-affiliated university accounting programs in Tennessee and the nation, respectively, in 2017 by Christian Universities Online.

Earlier this month, 2018 College Factual ranked Lipscomb’s accounting program the number one accounting program in Tennessee for the second consecutive year and one of the top 50 programs in the nation. The LU Department of Accounting also earned a ranking of 12th in the nation and No. 1 in the state for the second consecutive year for Best Accounting Programs for Veterans.

Ray Eldridge serves as dean of the LU College of Business and said the gift will help the entity “build on our strong momentum.”

“It is exciting for our students and faculty to see how many people believe in our mission, and it also attracts attention from others who want to be part of what we’re doing,” he said.

This is the second consecutive year that Lipscomb officials have announced what, at the time, was the largest gift in institutional history.

At the Imagine 2017 event, Lowry announced that the university had received a $15 million gift from George Shinn, former owner of the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, to support the LU College of Entertainment and the Arts and to fund a new events center, among other initiatives.

Four women were recognized for their achievements as entrepreneurs Thursday morning during Heidelberg University’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Awards.

“Women entrepreneurs hold a special place in our hearts and are the bright spot of the local economy and in the community,” said Susan McCafferty, chair of the Patricia Adams Lecture Series Committee.

Zoe Dolch received the New Entrepreneur Award this year.

Dolch is a Tiffin native who went to Kent State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising with a minor in marketing.

She said she dreamed of opening a unique business. She and her boyfriend, Spenser Blackiston, made their dream come to life by opening their shop, Washington Street Outfitters, at 116 S. Washington St. in the Laird Arcade Building.

Washington Street Outfitters offers women’s and men’s clothing, old vinyl music, home goods, gifts and accessories.

“This was a surprise,” Dolch said.

At 24 years old, Dolch said she hopes her success inspires other students who are sitting where she was not too long ago.

Kelli Dariano

Established Entrepreneur Award winner Kelli Dariano is the owner [of] Threads, established 19 years ago.

Dariano earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from John Carroll University in 1992 and started a career in sales/management, working for ArtCarved and Marshall Fields in Chicago and Columbus.

Dariano said when she moved back to Tiffin and opened Threads, there were not the “cool little shops Tiffin has now.”

“It was scary and exciting and an awesome adventure,” she said.

Threads is Dariano’s “baby,” she said.

“We had the terrible twos moments and are now making it through the teenage years,” she said. “It is an awesome challenge.”

Dariano said she had to work through changes in fashion and online shopping.

“It is so different and dynamic now,” she said. “We’ve had to find new ways to connect with the customers.”

Those customers have become Dariano’s family, she said.

Maya Clouse-Henry

Maya Clouse-Henry, an up-and-coming entrepreneur, received the Young Entrepreneur Award.

Clouse-Henry is a 16-year-old Columbian High School student who operates her own T-shirt design business and photography business.

She is president of student council for her sophomore class, participates in volleyball and swimming and works part-time at Behm and Henry Law Offices and Simply Susan’s.

Clouse-Henry said she appreciates her parents helping her achieve her goals.

“I want to thank Heidelberg for acknowledging all that we do, it is really cool,” she said.

Karen Klepper

Karen Klepper, a 1991 Heidelberg graduate majoring in psychology and accounting, has served on the boards of the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Tiffin-Seneca United Way, Heidelberg Fellows Organization, the NOAH Foundation (No One Alone or Hungry on Christmas Day) and PatchWorks House.

She is working to start a community-wide, collaborative, non-profit called ReClaim It — a resale shop with proceeds used to improve the lives of children by strengthening the systems they depend upon.

These efforts have earned Klepper the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Klepper has partnered with Sentinel Career and Technology Center and students create the space.

“I really appreciate this honor,” she said. “I’m honored for being part of a community with so many compassionate people who are not afraid to step forward.”

ReClaim It is geared toward being a supportive space for young people to turn away from negative choices and a space to reclaim what was theirs.

“I want this project to empower the youth,” she said. “We cannot be the ones to write their stories.”

Klepper said she spent two years interviewing young people in the community who are struggling with their home lives. Through this effort, she decided to create a safe space for them.

“I want them to know they are worthy of something,” she said.

Clouse-Henry has been assisting Klepper with ReClaim It, photographing the project and progress.

“Karen is amazing,” Clouse-Henry said of her fellow winner. “She has done so much for this community.”

Oral Roberts University built a Global Learning Center that combines anytime, anywhere access to information, course materials and streaming media with a deep dive into augmented and virtual reality.

Oral Roberts University's Global Learning Center team is providing a worldwide community of students with a rich collection of learning materials enhanced with virtual reality.

As Oral Roberts University began work on an augmented and virtual reality initiative back in 2014, academic and technology leaders on campus determined that offering the latest AR/VR content resources to the local Tulsa, OK-based campus was simply not enough. Under the leadership of ORU President William Wilson, and with a strong commitment and a Globalization Case Statement from the Board of Trustees, the university set out to "use new paradigms in technologies to reach millions" — addressing both concept skills and professional competence for students around the globe.

The university invested $8.5 million to construct a Global Learning Center that was in full service by AY 2016-2017. The center's planners decided that AR/VR would be among the key technologies they would use to bring ORU's education to students worldwide. Along with classrooms, studios, a performance hall and conference rooms, the center's upper level features an AR/VR facility dedicated to content in more than 7,000 academic subjects. To make a growing volume of curricular content more easily accessible for both campus-based and international students, the plan included a Digital IT Concierge service — with a simple search interface that helps students identify the resources and services they need 24/7.

The ambitious plan for AR/VR content discovery and access is a good fit for the university as it defines its role and services in the digital age. Through the Global Learning Center, students not only experience advanced digital technology routinely, they also become part of ORU's entire global community of students who have access to educational media and relevant services where and when they need them.

Faculty and staff use the AR/VR platform — with the digital concierge — to collaborate with peers and offer innovative, relevant, interactive content and services. "Our seamless service and solutions — which harmoniously connect innovative teamwork and leading-edge technologies — are directly benefitting students," said project lead and AVP for Innovation and Technology Michael Mathews.

Operating at scale, and with a need to establish services within an acceptable timeline, the center's programs must draw on technologies that will support quick and reliable content creation and still promote innovation, experimentation and leadership. ORU chose vendor partners that could align with the university's vision as well as its development needs.

The university created a supportive and flexible environment for change. Faculty and administrators can browse a library of existing interactive AR/VR lessons to incorporate into their courses, or they can create their own content from scratch. ORU selected the AR/VR software platform by EON Reality as the best fit. With EON's cloud-based AR/VR platform, ORU can develop, run, manage, access, store, host and distribute its AR/VR applications to a wide range of devices, from smartphones and holographic displays to ORU's immersive three-dimensional VR room. Faculty and staff of all experience levels have used the platform to create knowledge transfer applications and build their development skills as desired. Academic planners observed that these educators have created more than half a million learning objects to date.

Finally, the most important element in the Global Learning Center's success is delivering all of the newly developed content resources to their appropriate audiences. Planners partnered with rSmart to implement that company's OneCampus product — a lightweight, cloud-based service that makes it easy for students to discover and access relevant information. Students query the university's disparate resources and services via a simple, central interface known on campus as ORU's Digital IT Concierge. The search-based system sits on top of existing business applications and connects users through ORU's authentication system. The OneCampus solution was deployed without disruption within the first 48 hours.

Now, through the digital concierge, students have access to all of ORU's mobile and web-based campus services, including curricula, AR/VR lessons, academic calendars, events, advising and practical information such as campus maps and dining services. The Digital IT Concierge has become the center of knowledge transfer across campus. Officials estimate that an astonishing 93 billion data transactions are engaged throughout campus each semester through the digital concierge.

For the Global Learning Center, OneCampus is the crucial link that has helped to build a connected and global learning community that prospers from ORU's advanced AR/VR resources. As Mathews reflected, "ORU is the first university to deploy an enterprise approach to augmented and virtual reality content that can be discovered and accessed by students globally through a cloud-based portal. By offering easy access to our Global Learning Center through the Digital IT Concierge, we can now provide students worldwide with full immersion into a digital world that includes many thousands of highly relevant learning objects."

The University of Redlands recently announced that it has received accreditation for its graduate and undergraduate business programs from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

“While our student and alumni surveys have consistently noted the value of our business programs, the ACBSP accreditation is a very meaningful milestone in the evolution of the school,” said Thomas Horan, dean of the U of R School of Business, in a press release. “Moreover, to receive this 10-year accreditation with accolades for exceeding all six of ACBSP’s standards of excellence gives us a tremendous sense of confidence in terms of how we can positively impact the success and careers of our business students.”

Established in 1988, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs is the only organization offering specialized business accreditation for all degree levels, from associate to baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs.

When it comes to how higher education leaders can get more students to their institutions, the same advice comes up over and over again — build partnerships with local K-12 districts. A plethora of these types of examples exist in everything from summer camps for high school students to mentorship programs. But, what if your institution could build a far-reaching partnership with hundreds of businesses, several school districts, other universities and the local community at the same time? 

That's exactly what Northwest Missouri State University did when partnered with the city of Gladstone, Missouri, and the North Kansas City School District to construct the Northland Innovation Center — a building designed to educate students from the kindergarten to the postsecondary-degree level, with a particular focus on targeting the school-to-college-to-career pipeline through an interactive, project-based learning environment.

Tapping into a national innovation model

The decision to build the center came at an opportune time for all parties involved, said Northwest Missouri State University president John Jasinski in an interview. Gladstone and the North Kansas City Schools District were looking for an opportunity to uplift its SAGE program, which serves academically gifted students from kindergarten to 8th grade.

At the same time, Northwest MSU wanted to expand its offerings to the city of Gladstone. Maximizing economies of scale, the institution and district worked together with the state to construct a building that could serve students across all levels in a unique, experimental learning environment. 

But, said Jasinski, while the building was a partnership with the district and the city, it really served as a conduit for the institution to partner with the Northland Caps, a branch of the nationally recognized innovation model known as the CAPS Network — or Center for Advanced Professional Studies — that is in 12 states, according to its website. The program focuses on facilitating profession-based learning, innovative curriculum responsive to workforce needs, real-world professional and experiential learning, skill and entrepreneurship development across the K-21 pipeline. 

By participating in this program, said Jasinski, the university accessed larger partnerships across local industry leaders, the other seven surrounding Missouri school districts and the local Metro Community College, among other institutions in the area. All the while, Northwest MSU could strategically use the building for students, while also focusing on workforce needs like digital media and design, engineering, advanced manufacturing and global business. 

"Through this we were able to put together a fast-track program with Metro Community College and a concurrent enrollment model where we remove time and costs to degree completion by having that be done at the NIC," said Jasinski. "We also have worked with Northland city schools to pilot and implement a grow your own program which helps their high school students who are interested in pursuing teaching careers. They have a chance to come to the NIC and get college credit and get on a pathway to teaching and working with younger students all in the same building."

"There are other CAPs models out there, but I can attest the Northland model has been very successful and has exploded in popularity, helping more and more student receive college credit and address professional skills outcomes," he added. 

Informed by pedagogy and local needs

The Northland Innovation Center is a 95,000-square-foot facility on a five acre-campus in Gladstone completed in August 2017. The partnership's leaders prioritized a pedagogical design approach that would be based on project-based learning and educating students to be ready for a collaborative, technology-entrenched workforce. This occurs as students earn high school and college elective credits while participating in internships with partner businesses.

The decision to build the center, according to Blue Valley Schools Superintendent Todd White, who spearheaded the K-12 aspect of the project when he was superintendent of the North Kansas School District, was made in an effort to meet the needs of the community, as well as create more space for the growing numbers of K-12 students in pre-existing schools.

But, the focus wasn't just on building partnerships to target the pipeline; it was also about creating more engaging and strategic learning environments for advanced pupils. To achieve this end, the building's design had to be deliberate, he said. 

"[This] could be a once in a lifetime opportunity so we really had to think ... what are our kids doing now and in 25 ot 30 years," said White. To achieve tha goal, he said he, Jasinski and other partners went into the workforce and observed the needs of industries to inform the building's design and how students could learn in it. 

He added they also visited the CAPs program at the Blue Valley School District in Missouri to understand how the facility could create unique opportunities. 

Investing in the innovation mindset 

In terms of how that goal of coming up with a unique design actually played out, Hosam Habib, lead designer at Hoefer Wysocki, the design partner chosen to construct the building, said there were a lot of strategic discussions. Partners focused on creating a campus where students would want to spend time as college students, while at the same time creating a secure environment for younger students.

The focus, though, was on creating a facility that could "give a glimpse to the younger student about what it's like to go to college," said Habib. "And vice versa — the higher education student, who perhaps wants to be a teacher, can see what it's like to have a school where there's robots ... and can see what their future students may be like," 

Habib said the space was designed to "be shared without any walls, and where there is cross pollination that creates innovation instead of the silos of walled off classrooms." With multiple entrances that could create secure spaces for younger students, but also open arenas and lounges for older students to gather — including a 14-foot-wide hallway with writable walls and touch screens — the building was made to feel unique, but still a traditional and collaborative college setting where students could facilitate the exchange of ideas. 

Investing in such an approach is much different than most education-business partnerships. However, Jasinski said these arrangements are not only key to preparing students for an evolved work environment, but also worthwhile to education. 

"I'm talking about the whole pipeline; we all have to be interconnected and work together. There's not one specific path that works for everyone," said Jasinski.

"It's important to listen, learn, respond and be agile," he said.

The partnership continues to support the pursuit of higher education among County employees.

MSM focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship to drive sustainable business

Daniel Mazzini left a job of 14 years to pursue an MBA at Maastricht School of Management (MSM). Now, he’s exploring new opportunities in sustainability consulting and entrepreneurship

For Maastricht School of Management (MSM) MBA grad Daniel Mazzini, the future lies in sustainable development and entrepreneurship.

Originally from Peru, Daniel spent 14 years working in engineering roles at Schlumberger across Argentina, the UAE, and the US. Then, the 2016 oil crisis hit; jobs were in scarce supply.

Determined to pursue a new path, Daniel decided to move with his family to Europe and an MBA at Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands—one of the country’s oldest and most international business schools.

“It was nice to go back to school and listen to something different to what Schlumberger had to say,” Daniel says.

MSM’s one-year MBA offers four specialized tracks—Entrepreneurship, International Business and Sustainable Development, Accounting and Finance, and The Digital Economy—with students exploring sustainable development across the MBA curriculum.

When asked about the most inspirational aspect of the course, Daniel points to the MBA’s Entrepreneurship specialization which combines classroom-based lectures with experiential learning experiences.

Daniel’s class was tasked with interviewing local entrepreneur Bart Bost, creator of Greentom, a baby buggy made entirely of recyclable materials.

“Interviewing this guy who created this company inspired me a lot,” says Daniel. “It broadened my frame of mind, especially [after] working for the same company for 14 years.”

Maastricht School of Management’s MBA encouraged Daniel to change career track. After over a decade working in fossil fuels, he’s now pursuing a career in the sustainability space, consulting for a startup founded by an ex-colleague who’s created a new sustainable material.

He’s also looking to take the leap into entrepreneurship himself; bringing superfoods from his native Peru to Europe.

“I think it’s the future,” Daniel says of sustainable business. “Oil has maybe 20 or 30 more years left in it—that’s it! —and the laws in Europe in particular are driving the switch to renewable energy. Because of the environment, and the responsibilities I have to my kids, I think it’s the right thing to do.”

Daniel credits his MBA with opening his eyes to new possibilities. “I can say that an MBA—any MBA, but in particular MSM—helps.

“In my case, [as an] engineer, we’re always looking at problems and numbers. But an MBA from MSM gives you a broader view of things—you see the bigger picture.”

Josette Dijkhuizen, award-winning social entrepreneur and expert consultant, has served as an honorary professor in the entrepreneurship department MSM for the past three years.

She sees the school’s focus on entrepreneurship—allowing budding entrepreneurs to tailor their MBA experience to match their needs—as central to its drive towards creating business leaders with a social conscience.

“The whole customization of MSM’s programs—I think that’s what the world needs,” she says. “We don’t need basic programs; we need programs dedicated to certain people so that they have more of the specific knowledge that they need in their working environment.

“We need entrepreneurs who are critical, who come up with new ideas, new products, and new services,” Josette continues.

“Development lies in education and having critical thinkers, and that’s what Maastricht School of Management does best.”

The business programs at Maastricht School of Management have been accredited by ACBSP since 2000.

Grand Canyon University officials announced Tuesday that the school's accreditor has approved their application to convert to a non-profit. 

The Higher Learning Commission's approval is key for the private Christian school to move forward with plans for non-profit status. The commission previously denied approval for GCU in 2016. But since then, it has come up with additional guidelines for schools that want to convert to non-profits. 

“This is consistent with GCU’s history and puts us on a level playing field with other traditional universities with regard to tax status and, among other things, the ability to accept philanthropic contributions, pursue research grant opportunities, and participate in NCAA governance," GCU President Brian Mueller said in a statement.

GCU was a non-profit school from 1949 to 2004 before it fell on financial hard times and was purchased by a group of investors. The company went public on the Nasdaq in 2008.

The next step is for the for-profit company that now owns the school, Grand Canyon Education Inc., to sell academic assets to a newly formed non-profit entity. Mueller expects the transition to be complete by June 30. 

GCU also will need approvals from the U.S. Department of Education, the Internal Revenue Service and the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education, which regulates for-profit schools in the state. Mueller said he doesn't anticipate difficulties with those three entities. 

Under the plan, GCU will become a non-profit university governed by an independent board of trustees.

The parent company will be a publicly-traded, educational services company that would provide services to GCU and potentially other organizations. Services would include marketing, curriculum development, recruiting, counseling, accounting and human resources.

Switching to a non-profit status would allow the university to accept donations and research grants. It also would remove the stigma sometimes associated with the for-profit education industry.

In addition, the school's residential campus at 33rd Avenue and Camelback Road no longer would pay property taxes. 

The university had 90,297 students as of Dec. 31. Most attend online, but the school's  270-acre residential campus in west Phoenix had about 18,842 students.

From Catawba College: Catawba College has learned that its business programs are now accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs or the ACBSP (www.acbsp.org). 

Catawba President Brien Lewis shared the good news on campus after receiving a letter of confirmation from the ACBSP.

The Ketner School of Business has spent the past several years working to meet the six standards required for its programs to be accredited by the ACBSP.  The accreditation of the programs below is for a 10-year period, until 2027, at which time, Catawba must submit materials for a reaffirmation of accreditation for its programs by ACBSP.
