Building a Workforce with Future-Proof Skills - One Project at a Time!

Building a Workforce with Future-Proof Skills - One Project at a Time!

Students require an evolving list of graduate attributes far beyond course, program and discipline competencies. Challenged by disruptions in technology and business practices, educators must courageously deviate from conventional pedagogy so students develop the required attributes while learning key competencies. Programs that integrate management competencies with other major disciplines (e.g. engineering technology) have the added burden of assuring harmonization. How do we conjointly meet engineering skill requirements, develop management competencies, encourage critical employment attributes, keep students engaged and have fun? First, offer cleverly scaffolded courses that connect technical, problem solving, and management skills to practical applications in industry. Second, include projects where students plan, design, perform, analyze and report on a topic of their own choosing. Lastly, give students a rich and fulfilling opportunity to interact with industry professionals.
