Basis for the Decision/Program CommentsCriterion 3.2 Stakeholder Satisfaction One way that helps retain students is through the Business Unit faculty providing extra assistance, advising, and tutoring during and after scheduled office hours. Business Unit faculty personally reach out to students in need via email, phone, or on campus (in the hallway). Business Unit faculty offer independent study opportunities for those students that need to graduate. Current and former students feel that the instructors and advisers really care about them. Evidence for the success of these initiatives was noted in positive student opinion surveys, as well as through the anecdotal information gathered from students participating in The Learning Center tutoring sessions. Results are analyzed to determine the need for additional services and how those services should be delivered. Categories: Approach, Deployment, Results Verified: This Strength was verified on site. The Business Unit maintains an awareness of the needs and expectations of current students through the use of academic advising by full-time faculty. Each semester all students in the Business Unit must meet with their adviser to officially register for the next semester and have their hold released. Part of that process is to review the student's academic plan in Degree Works, which lists all course requirements for the degree program. Faculty assigned as the "primary instructor" will also continue to maintain a master of each course in both the Administrative Professional Technology and Business degree programs on the College's Learning Management System (LMS), Desire to Learn (D2L). This could include an explanation of the long-term employment potential with the addition of a few more classes. Categories: Approach Verified: This OFI was verified on site. Institution Comment Students in the Administrative Professional Technology and Business degree programs are required to meet with their assigned advisor each semester. Faculty advise students of the advantages of taking additional courses to expand their skill set and broaden employment opportunities. They discuss courses that articulate in one or more concentrations that allow them to graduate as a double-major. Advisors then develop an academic plan for the student to follow to complete their degree program. The academic plan is reviewed each semester with the student to ensure they are on track and adjustments are made where warranted. The Business Unit also visits area high schools as well as participates in Career Days on-campus visits to market the degree programs.
