Basis for Decision/Program CommentsStrengths (8)Organizational Challenges [VI.b] The business unit documented in the Self Study and demonstrated during the site visit that it has a performance improvement process in place. The culture of continuous improvement is supported by institutional ISO 9001:2008 certification. The process has been helpful to the program in improving its strategy process, planning for improvements in curriculum and facilities, and managing operations. Categories: Approach, Improvements Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 2.1 [2.1, 2.1.a, 2.1.b] The Self Study demonstrated and it was verified on site that the business unit has a formal process by which its strategic direction is determined, its action plans are formulated and deployed, and innovation and creativity are encouraged. The strategic planning process represents a very advanced and sophisticated approach to determining strategies and providing for execution planning. Categories: Approach Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 2.2 [2.2.a., 2.2.b., 2.2.c.] The business unit's strategic action plans address both short- and long-term objectives. The plans have been developed as part of a comprehensive and robust strategic planning process and are cascaded to all areas and levels of the organization. The role model approach has been fully deployed for planning and is in the process of deployment for the goal setting and monitoring of goal completion. The approach is helpful to the business unit in growing its scope and quality of programs. Categories: Approach, Results, Improvements Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 3.2 [3.2] The business unit has identified its key stakeholders, including students, alumni, recruiters, parents, and industry and community members and has established strong relationships with all groups. A formal process of collecting, documenting and analyzing feedback from students, alumni and recruiters is clearly evident. The unit has a systematic procedure to determine the requirements and expectations of the current and future students and stakeholders that has enriched relationships with its stakeholders. Categories: Approach, Deployment, Results Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 4.2 [4.2] The business unit has a well-defined comprehensive outcome assessment plan, which has been implemented in a systematic manner. Broad based program level goals, objectives and learning outcomes have been established. Learning outcomes have been outlined at course levels for the programs. At least three cycles of data are in evidence related to assessment practices. This data comes from various assessment tools used by the business unit. Categories: Approach, Deployment, Results Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 5.8 [5.8.1] Over the past several years the business unit has engaged in a determined program to enhance the output of scholarly publications by faculty. Because of the program impressive progress was shown, as documented in the Self Study and evident during the site visit. Categories: Approach, Deployment, Results Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 6.2.1 [6.2.1] The efforts made by the business unit in analyzing and documenting educational processes through its role-model strategic planning efforts will be helpful to the goals of expanding and enhancing the scope and reach of the institution. Categories: Approach, Deployment Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Criterion 6.2.2 [6.2.2] The efforts made by the business unit in analyzing and documenting business processes through its role-model strategic planning efforts will be helpful to the goals of expanding and enhancing the scope and reach of the institution. Categories: Approach, Deployment Verified: This Strength was verified on site.Opportunities for Improvement (OFI) (8)Review of All Academic Activities [I] The business program was advised during the site visit that diplomas that are not in essence degree programs are not currently included in the scope of accreditation for ACBSP and cannot be accredited by this process. Categories: ApproachConditions of Accreditation [III.g] The Self Study has not demonstrated external publication of information to the public on its performance, including student achievement, such as assessment results. The issue was discussed during the site visit and the institution alerted to the need to have publication of the information in this area. Categories: Approach Verified: This OFI was verified on site.Organizational Challenges [VI.b] The business unit's performance improvement system is in early stages of deployment and currently lacks a complete set of tools that can be deployed in a systematic and repeatable fashion, e.g. Lean Six Sigma, PDSA, Quality Action Teams (FADE), etc. Deploying the performance improvement process with a toolset may be helpful to the business program in realizing fully benefits from its performance improvement system. Categories: Approach, Improvements Verified: This OFI was verified on site.Criterion 2.1 [2.1] Although the business unit has an architected and sophisticated approach to strategic planning, tools and techniques to assist in the full deployment of the process are not fully developed. The development and deployment of tools to assist with the full implementation of the strategic planning process could be helpful to the business unit in realizing the full potential of its strategic planning process. Categories: Approach, Deployment Verified: This OFI was verified on site.Criterion 4.1 [4.1] The distinction between formative and summative assessment is not clear in the business unit's approach to assessment. Data that is logically used for formative purposes is presented for summative purposes. It may be helpful to the business unit to develop approaches that clearly differentiate between formative and summative data and the appropriate uses of each. Ensuring distinctions in identifying, administering, and analyzing formative versus summative data may assist the business unit in attaining enrollment and teaching excellence goals. Categories: Deployment, Results Verified: This OFI was verified on site.Criterion 5.8 [5.8.1] Despite the substantial progress of the business unit in increasing the volume of scholarly publications, there is an opportunity for improvement to engage in a more balanced range of scholarly activities in alignment with the teaching mission of the business unit. To fit more closely to ACBSP norms, the business unit may consider defining and deploying an approach to faculty scholarship and creative activities that encompasses all four dimensions of the Boyer model and especially the domain of scholarship of teaching and learning. Such a focus may be helpful to the business unit to further its stated values of Excellence (educational programs and student experiences), Responsiveness, Teamwork, and Creativity. Categories: Deployment, Improvements Verified: This OFI was verified on site. [5.8.2] The level of activity in scholarly publication achieved by the business unit is not evenly matched and balanced by the level of engagement in professional activities. The information provided in Figure 5.6 and verified during the site visit demonstrates a comparative lack of professional activities by faculty when compared to scholarly pursuits. It may be helpful to the business unit in pursuit of its goals related to excellence in teaching to ensure that faculty are active in the business community and can thereby enhance teaching with current, real world perspectives. Categories: Approach, Results Verified: This OFI was verified on site.Criterion 6.1.7 [6.1.7] Although the business unit presented evidence in the Self Study and on site of curriculum review and revision, the approach lacks many elements of a systematic and repeatable process of program review. Aspects lacking from a typical program review included market and trend analysis, broad and systematic stakeholder input, comparisons to programs offered by competing institutions, a review of the alignment of program elements to needs of student and stakeholder segments, etc. Development and deployment of a more holistic program review approach may be helpful to the business unit in attaining its goals of enrollment growth, program additions, and enhancement of the quality of instruction.
