LAKE STATE DEAN, INTERIM PROVOST NAMED TO OPERATION ACTION U.P. BOARD
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Jan. 29, 2016) – Lake Superior State University Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs David Roland Finley has been named to the governing board of Operation Action U.P. Finley was elected for a term that lasts at least one year by vote of members present during a Jan. 27 meeting in Marquette, Mich.
Operation Action U.P. brings together interested industrial corporations, financial institutions, utilities, institutions of higher learning, businesses and concerned citizens into a coalition that works to create a favorable economic climate and strong employment base for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The only privately-funded economic development organization in the state, it embraces all types of industries and serves a 15 county area. It has drawn members from every corner of the Upper Peninsula for more than 50 years.
Finley came to Lake Superior State University in 2012 as dean of the College of Business, Engineering and Economic Development, recently split into the Lukenda School of Business and the School of Engineering and Technology, both of which he continues to head.
An initiative that has moved forward during Finley's LSSU tenure is a $13 million, 42,000-square-foot renovation of a hall that will house the Lukenda School of Business this fall. Another includes the school's accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), a leading international accreditation association in business education. A new master of business administration program is also in the works.
On the engineering side, Finley continues to foster collaboration between LSSU and Sault Ste. Marie's SmartZone, a creation of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) that promotes regional technology-based businesses and entrepreneurs. School of Engineering & Technology enrollment has grown 20% over the past four years, led by increases in the mechanical engineering and engineering technology programs. LSSU's robotics lab has seen two significant upgrades worth up to $1 million, along with key improvements in other laboratories.
