Teaching Excellence Award Details

ELIGIBILITY

Teaching faculty at ACBSP member institutions are eligible to apply. Any individual may also nominate an eligible faculty member or colleague. The applicant must be currently teaching the academic year at a member institution and at the time of the award decision.

The applicant must also show the intent to attend the ACBSP Annual Conference in June. Previous recipients of the regional award will not be eligible to re-apply for a period of five years.

CRITERIA

The Teaching Excellence Award Committee has established three criterions for the selection of recipients, both at the Regional and International levels. These are the criteria the evaluators will be basing their decisions on:

1. Teaching & Learning (700 points -- 7000-character limit)

This criterion is considered the most important factor to be used in the selection process. These 700 points are broken down as follows:

  • 100 points: Communicates effectively with students.
  • 100 points: Plans, prepares and delivers effective and dynamic lessons.
  • 100 points: Establishes and maintains positive rapport with students.
  • 100 points: Goes beyond contractual obligations to help students succeed.
  • 100 points: Effectively prepares students for real world situations.
  • 100 points: Demonstrates creativity and adaptability through the use of a variety of teaching techniques and technologies.
  • 100 points: Contributes to the scholarship of teaching by sharing knowledge through teaching-focused publications and/or presentations or practitioner-based workshops.

2. Professional Development (200 points -- 2500-character limit)

This criterion considers the nominee’s academic background and preparation; business, industrial, or other professional experience; and the demonstrated commitment of the nominee to remain current in his/her academic discipline through involvement in professional developmental opportunities at the institutional, local, regional, national, and international levels. These 200 points are broken down as follows:

  • 100 points: Demonstrates a strong mix of academic preparation and professional experience.
  • 100 points: Demonstrates commitment to remaining up-to-date on current thoughts, theories and practices in the subject matters.

3. Institutional and Community Commitment (100 points -- 2500-character limit)

This criterion considers the extent and scope of the nominee’s involvement in civic and professional activities within the institution and in the community served by the institution. These 100 points are broken down as follows:

  • 50 points: Responds to institutional needs and the need of the community at large by participating in activities that lift and strengthen the community.
  • 50 points: Provides mentorship to members of the community to help them prepare for a better future.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Once a nomination is received, ACBSP home office will contact the nominee and inform them of the nomination.

  • The nominee will then be required to complete the online application and submit the additional required materials (i.e. responses to the three criteria, recommendation letter from immediate supervisor, curriculum vitae, high-resolution photo, and statement of teaching philosophy) in order to complete the application process. All applications must be submitted electronically via our online portal. Only electronic submissions will be received. Completed applications and all supporting files must be submitted online by the deadline.
  • The completed application will be acknowledged by a reply stating that the application materials were received successfully. If you do not receive an acknowledgement, please contact us at excellence@acbsp.org or by phone at 913-339-9356.
  • Regional award recipients will be determined by mid-April. Every applicant will receive an email message announcing the Teaching Excellence Award recipients from their respective region.
  • Teaching Excellence Award recipients, representing all 11 ACBSP regions, then become nominees for the International Teaching Excellence Award. Application materials for the regional award recipients are automatically forwarded to the Teaching Excellence Award Committee. No other action is needed on the part of the regional award recipient.

For all candidates whose primary language is not English, for best consideration by the International Teaching Excellence Award Committee, we recommend that all materials be translated into English prior to the time of submission.
